Changes in soil organic carbon after burning in a forest-savanna edge Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Sánchez Ojeda,Federico; Armenteras Pascual,Dolors.
Abstract Soils are one of the largest terrestrial pools of carbon, yet there is still little understanding of spatial variability for ecosystems in the tropics. Fire plays an important role in Neotropical savannas ecosystems and significantly contribute to global greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. Nevertheless, the impacts of burning on soil carbon is still uncertain in Latin America. We compared soil organic carbon (SOC) in the first 20 cm depth in savannas in pre and post fire conditions along a forests-savanna edge typically present in these landscapes of the northern South America. We established 8 transects of 20 m longitude along the border with 1m2 plots sampled every 4 m. SOC pre-disturbance was on average 1.794 (±SE 0.043) and the minimum value found...

Community structure of vascular plants in treefall gaps and fire-disturbed habitats in the Atlantic rainforest, southern Bahia, Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Martini,Adriana Maria Zanforlin; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës dos; Prado,Paulo Inácio; Jardim,Jomar Gomes.
The effects of disturbances on plant community structure in tropical forests have been widely investigated. However, a majority of these studies examined only woody species, principally trees, whereas the effects of disturbances on the whole assemblage of vascular plants remain largely unexplored. At the present study, all vascular plants < 5m tall were surveyed in four habitats: natural treefall gaps, burned forest, and their adjacent understorey. The burned area differed from the other habitats in terms of species composition. However, species richness and plant density did not differ between burned area and the adjacent understorey, which is in accordance to the succession model that predict a rapid recovery of species richness, but with a different...

Disturbance as a factor in breaking dormancy and enhancing invasiveness of African grasses in a Neotropical Savanna Acta Botanica
Gorgone-Barbosa,Elizabeth; Pivello,Vânia R.; Baeza,M. Jaime; Fidelis,Alessandra.
The Cerrado is threatened by wildfires and invasive species. We aimed to evaluate in laboratory conditions whether temperature fluctuation at the soil surface, resulting from the absence of vegetation due to fire, can affect the germination of Urochloa decumbens and U. brizantha, two invasive African grasses. Seeds of both species were submitted to simulations: 1) temperature during fire at 1cm belowground (F); 2) temperature fluctuation at 1cm belowground without vegetation cover for a month (TF); 3) (F) + (TF); 4) control at 25ºC. After treatments, seeds were put to germinate at 25ºC for 40 days. We had four replicates per treatment and three temporal replicates. We compared germination percentage and the mean germination time among treatments using...

Does fire determine distinct floristic composition of two Cerrado savanna communities on different substrates? Acta Botanica
Lenza,Eddie; Abadia,Ana Clara; Menegat,Hélio; Lúcio,Nadjarriny W.; Maracahipes-Santos,Leonardo; Mews,Henrique A.; Santos,Josias O. dos; Martins,Jhany.
ABSTRACT We surveyed two savanna sites, one on flat terrain with deep soil (DS), and the other on hilly terrain with rocky outcrops and shallow soil (RS), before and after an accidental fire. We found that the fire did not cause any significant changes in the species composition or diversity of either community, and did not result in floristic homogenization. However, we did record a reduction in the density of plants and in basal area in the DS savanna in comparison with the RS savanna, as well as a higher rate of basal sprouting, which indicates a trade-off between mortality and sprouting. We conclude that, whereas post-fire changes in vegetation structure were more pronounced in the DS savanna than in the RS, the difference in the underlying substrate...

Ecology of small terrestrial mammals in an isolated Cerrado patch, eastern Paraguay: communities, species, and effects of enso, precipitation, and fire Mastozool. neotrop.
Owen,Robert D.
The Cerrado extends as islands or patches into the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest (UPAF) of Brazil and Paraguay. This study evaluates the temporal dynamics of a marginal terrestrial small-mammal community in an isolated Cerrado patch within the UPAF, at the southwestern distributional limit of the Cerrado and near the western limit of the UPAF in eastern Paraguay. Because the faunal members of marginal communities are living near the limits of their capabilities in terms of their abiotic and biotic environment, the communities in such areas are likely to be a mixture of Cerrado and UPAF species, sensitive to extrinsic variables such as climate change and anthropogenic changes in land use. In this 23-month study, temporal dynamics of a terrestrial...

Effect of high temperature on germination of four legumes from a forest-grassland mosaic in Southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Silveira,Fernanda Schmidt; Overbeck,Gerhard Ernst.
Passage of a fire can break dormancy of the seeds of many plant species in fire-prone ecosystems. This response to fire is especially well known for the Fabaceae family, but has been poorly studied in Southern Brazil. We collected seeds of four Fabaceae species present in grasslands-forest mosaics of Southern Brazil: Mimosa bimucronata, Desmodium barbatum, Sesbania virgata and Collaea stenophylla. Seeds were exposed to different heat treatments (exposure to 60° and 80 °C for 5 minutes, to 100 °C for 2 minutes, control without heat treatment); not all species were tested in all treatments. After the treatment, the seeds were kept in a germination chamber with a light period of 12/12 hours and temperature of 25 °C. Germinated seeds were counted every 2 days....

Effect of prescribed fre on forage production and nutritive value of the perennial grass Saccharum griffithii Phyton
Gul,B; Islam,M; Ahmad,S; Gul,S.
The effect of fre on growth and nutritive value of Saccharum griffithii Munro ex Boiss-ravennae (Linn.) Murr. hybrid, a low palatable perennial grass in the semi-arid region of the highlands of Balochistan, Pakistan, was evaluated during 2008 and 2009. Prescribed fire treatments were applied in February 2008 and 2009 at the dormant stage of vegetation. Different growth parameters (tiller height, tiller number/plant), forage production (fresh, dry) and nutritive value (crude protein, ash) were compared with control (unburnt) plots. Fire increased the number of tillers, and the fresh and dry forage production in both years. Fire also improved the crude protein contents. Prescribed fire at the dormant stage of vegetation can be used as a vegetation tool to...

Expert and Generalist Local Knowledge about Land-cover Change on South Africa’s Wild Coast: Can Local Ecological Knowledge Add Value to Science? Ecology and Society
Chalmers, Nigel; Rhodes University, South Africa;; Fabricius, Christo; Rhodes University, South Africa; c.fabricius@ru.ac.za.
Local ecological knowledge (LEK) can shed light on ecosystem change, especially in under-researched areas such as South Africa’s Wild Coast. However, for ecosystem planning purposes, it is necessary to assess the accuracy and validity of LEK, and determine where such knowledge is situated in a community, and how evenly it is spread. Furthermore, it is relevant to ask: does LEK add value to science, and how do science and local knowledge complement one another? We assessed change in woodland and forest cover in the Nqabara Administrative Area on South Africa’s Wild Coast between 1974 and 2001. The inhabitants of Nqabara are “traditional” Xhosa-speaking people who are highly dependent on natural resources for their...

Fire effects on a Spartina densiflora salt marsh in the floodplain of the Paraná River, Argentina RChHN
MADANES,NORA; FISCHER,SYLVIA; VICARI,RICARDO.
We studied the effects of fire on the structural attributes of a Spartina densiflora salt marsh. The study was carried out from November 1995, spring (N95S) to December 1996, late spring (D96LS). In November 1995, we installed 37 permanent plots. In January 1996, 32 of the plots were accidentally burned (B) and the remaining were not burned (NB). Vegetation on each plot was sampled seasonally, plant species were identified and cover-abundance was estimated. We analyzed and compared seasonal variations in plant species richness, diversity, composition and cover-abundance in burned and non-burned plots. In addition, we analyzed variations in biological types (forbs, graminoids) and types of life cycles (annuals, perennials) in B and NB plots before and after...

Fire regimen and spread of plants naturalized in central Chile RChHN
CONTRERAS,TOMÁS E; FIGUEROA,JAVIER A; ABARCA,LUIS; CASTRO,SERGIO A.
Setting fires is an old practice of land management in the Mediterranean region of central Chile. Fire in the region is currently of predominantly human origin and previously published material suggests that the scheduling of these activities is associated with the spread of naturalized exotic species. Research into the effects of fire on both native and exotic Mediterranean vegetation in central Chile has increased notably over recent years. The objective of our review is to highlight new knowledge in this area of research from the last 30 years and to contribute to systematization and an explicit conceptual model which takes into account the effect of a fire regimen on the spread of exotic plants and the mechanisms involved. We begin with analyses of the...

Floristic and vegetation structure of a granitic grassland in Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Ferreira,Pedro Maria de Abreu; Müller,Sandra Cristina; Boldrini,Ilsi Iob; Eggers,Lilian.
A floristic and structural survey of a natural grassland community was conducted on Morro do Osso, a granitic hill in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. Structural data were surveyed in 39 one square meter plots placed over two major grassland areas. An accidental fire has occurred in one of the areas approximately one year prior to our survey, leading to further analysis of parameters differences between sites. The floristic list contains 282 species, whereas the structural survey has found 161 species. Families with highest accumulated importance values were Poaceae, Asteraceae and Fabaceae. The diversity and evenness indexes were 4.51 nats ind-1 and 0.86, respectively. Cluster analysis denoted two groups coinciding with the areas distinguished by the fire...

How does resprouting response differ among three species of savanna trees and in relation to plant size? Acta Botanica
Massi,Klécia Gili; Franco,Augusto César.
ABSTRACT Cerrado tree species can survive fire by resprouting. Generally, large and less damaged plants produce new branches and leaves from stem buds (aerial), whereas small and highly injured individuals would resprout from the stem base or from underground organs (basal). We compared the three most common Cerrado woody plant species in a savanna area of the IBGE Ecological Reserve, Brasília, Brazil, aiming to verify if the resprouting strategy (aerial or basal) differed between species and if that was related to plant size. Guapira noxia had small-sized plants, a higher percentage of trunk charred and more individuals with basal resprouting, while Eriotheca pubescens had large-sized plants with a greater intensity of aerial resprouting, Basal...

Invasion of Matrix Species in Small Habitat Patches Ecology and Society
The diversity, expressed as species richness in equal-sized samples, of wood-living beetles in successional stages of deciduous forest after forest fires approximately 100 years ago did not differ between patch sizes in this study. Thus, the crucial question for conservation is whether the lack of reduction in diversity in small patches means that a number of small patches can elevate the regional diversity as efficiently as can one larger area. In the present study, the smaller patches did not differ from larger patches in substrate availability, quality, or heterogeneity. The frequency of a group of species was measured as the number of occurrences, viz. the number of trees on which a species was found, summed over all species in the group. The number of...

Key factors affecting seed germination of Copaifera langsdorffii, a Neotropical tree Acta Botanica
Souza,Matheus Lopes; Silva,Dávila Regina Pacheco; Fantecelle,Laura Bubantz; Lemos Filho,José Pires de.
In natural conditions biotic and abiotic factors interact, synergistically affecting seed germination. In this study, we experimentally simulated natural conditions that occur during seed dispersal that can affect the germination of Copaifera langsdorffii. Specifically we evaluated the effect of aril removal by different dispersal agents (birds and ants) and fire on germination. The seeds were submitted to the following treatments: Control (seeds placed to germinate with aril intact); Acid (simulation of passage through the digestive tract of a bird); Aril removal (simulation of aril removed by ants); Fire (seeds exposed to fire). Germination percentage and time varied among treatments (X²=89.735, P<0.001; X²=16.225, P<0.001, respectively). None of...

Le comportement en fluage, en fatigue et la tenue au feu de composites sandwichs ArchiMer
Chevalier, J.
Baltek Corp. is currently in the process of introducing 3 new products: density select material, AL-600/10 and DecoLite panels, that reduce weight and cost. Creep results on typical core materials have shown that only end-grain balsa (EGB) and 9.0 lb. Nomex honeycomb were capable of continuous operation at 160 F (71 degree C). In reverse bending fatigue studies, EGB has a fatigue limit 2-2.4 times that of the PVC foams. Finally, while EGB by itself is a ASTM E-84 Class 2 material, with the proper skins and resin system, it can easily meet Class 1 requirements.
